Australian Federal Police Officer Charged with Bitcoin Theft

Police Officer Accused

William Wheatley, a suspended Australian Federal Police officer, has been accused of misappropriating 81.616 Bitcoin, valued around $450,000, from a seizure linked to a drug-trafficking probe. The charge followed new evidence in 2021 associating the crime to a law enforcement official, unsettling the initial assumption that the theft was the act of drug trafficker accomplices.

Cryptocurrency Heist Unfolds

The investigation, conducted by the Icarus Taskforce, revealed that the stolen Bitcoin had been transferred from a hardware wallet mere days after its confiscation in a raid on an illegal steroid dealer. A ‘rebuild’ application allowed access to the wallet, exposing the theft.

Investigation Traces Back to Officer

Crypto investigator Craig Gillespie linked IP addresses to the headquarters of the Australian Federal Police, leading to the suspicion of Wheatley's involvement. Despite his lawyer's claims of the evidence being circumstantial, transactions traced to Wheatley's personal bank suggest his direct connection to the heist.
