Bitcoin Accessibility Innovation
In regions where smartphones are less common, accessing Bitcoin poses a significant challenge. Addressing this, former Amazon software developer Kgothatso Ngako created Machankura, an app geared towards basic phones, facilitating Bitcoin transactions via texting, leveraging the Lightning Network. Machankura, meaning 'money', offers a solution for sending and receiving Bitcoin without internet access, a concept to be showcased at Consensus, Austin, Texas.
Revolutionizing Crypto Transactions
Machankura heralds ease of use by substituting complex wallet addresses with human-readable formats akin to email addresses. This innovation permits transactions without the need for smartphones. Kgothatso also founded Exonumia, aiming to make Bitcoin literature accessible by translating content into multiple African languages to surmount language barriers in Bitcoin education.
Bitcoin Use Cases in Africa
Machankura's user base, close to 15,000, spans numerous countries. Ngako explains that in Africa, users employ Bitcoin similarly to those in the U.S., exploring its use for airtime, electric bills, and groceries, often through gift cards. While only a fraction of users rely on Bitcoin for daily expenses, its primary appeal lies in exploring digital currency's potential.
