Ethereum Sets March 13 for Dencun Upgrade Featuring Proto-Danksharding

Countdown Begins for Ethereum's Dencun Upgrade

The Ethereum development team has scheduled the Dencun upgrade for March 13 during their latest coordination call. This marks a significant milestone for the blockchain as it heralds notable enhancements including the introduction of 'proto-danksharding.' This feature aims to lower transaction costs on secondary 'layer-2' networks by allocating special data storage space.

Seamless Progress on Testnets

The upgrade has undergone successful implementation on the Holesky testnet, with previous test networks also reporting no issues. Ethereum Foundation's Parithosh Jayanthi expressed excitement over the culmination of years of work approaching Ethereum's mainnet. The upgrade's activation will coincide with the blockchain reaching slot 8626176, anticipated on March 13 at 13:55 UTC. Developers are to officially confirm the date through GitHub.

Looking Beyond Dencun

The Dencun upgrade facilitates a new transaction category designed to reduce rollup costs via 'data blobs.' This cost-cutting measure enhances the appeal of projects such as Celestia, Avail, and EigenDA by making Ethereum-based data more affordable. The Dencun update is the first of many as Ethereum developers plan subsequent hard forks like Prague/Electra, which could introduce innovations like 'Verkle Trees' improving data validation while handling significant loads.
