Citi Bank Explores Blockchain with Tokenization of Private Equity

Tokenization Trial by Citi

Citi Bank has taken a significant step in the blockchain domain by experimenting with the tokenization of private equity funds utilizing Avalanche’s layer 1 technology, specifically the Spruce Subnet designed for traditional financial institutions. This exploration aims to reshape the structure of capital markets through the integration of public blockchain infrastructure.

Collaboration with TradFi Giants

The proof-of-concept trial conducted by Citi brought together traditional finance (TradFi) behemoths like WisdomTree and Wellington Management. Launched on Avalanche’s Evergreen subnet - Spruce, the test demonstrated successful end-to-end token transfers, secondary transfer for trading, and collateralized lending through enhanced smart contract capabilities. Such tests indicate a growing interest from Wall Street to leverage blockchain for efficient trade execution and settlements.

Advancing Capital Market Efficiencies

Citi’s innovative trial not only underscores the potential impact of blockchain on automating and streamlining operations but also highlights the possibility of establishing improved compliance and control measures for both investors and issuers. Nisha Surendran, Citi Digital Assets’ emerging solutions lead, asserts that this endeavor into tokenization could lead to new operational models and bring about market-wide efficiencies.
