Celo Chooses Optimism’s OP Stack for Its Ethereum Layer-2 Upgrade

The Celo blockchain development team has been actively searching for the right technology to form the foundation of its upcoming layer-2 network built on Ethereum. This search has kindled a competitive analysis between top layer-2 solutions, culminating in a proposal to adopt Optimism’s OP Stack for the transition.

Community Involvement

The selection has been thrown open to the Celo community, with discussions planned on community calls and a forthcoming vote by CELO token holders. This decision-making process follows months of technical evaluations by cLabs, the blockchain’s developers, who originally favored the OP Stack but took time to explore all options thoroughly before making a final decision.

Rene Reinsberg, co-founder of Celo and president of the Celo Foundation, stressed the importance of due diligence in the selection process. The team's exhaustive analysis explored alternatives like Arbitrum Orbit, zkSync’s ZK Stack, and Polygon CDK. The OP Stack, having gained traction with various blockchain projects including Coinbase and Worldcoin, was ultimately chosen for its compatibility and technical prowess.
